Financial Freedom: An Interesting Story

What’s your financial future look like? Will you have financial freedom when you’re ready to retire?

Financial Security Stats

Take any group of 100 people at the start of their working careers and follow them for 40 years until they reach retirement, and here’s what you will find out according to the Social Security Administration:

  • Only one will be wealthy.
  • Four will be financially secure.
  • Five will continue working, not because they want to, but because they have to.
  • 36 will be dead.
  • 54 will be dead broke–dependent upon their meager Social Security checks, relatives, friends, and even charity for a minimum standard of living.

To that point, 75 percent, of Americans manage their own finances, with no help from a professional or online service, according to a new CNBC and Acorns “Invest In You Savings Survey.” Only 17 percent of responders said they use a financial advisor. (April 2, 2109)

The evidence seems clear that having a written financial plan helps people stay on track and reach their financial goals, yet only one in four Americans has a plan, according to new research.

When I first started in the life insurance business over 40 years ago, we used this story as part of our sales process. Except for the number of people living, and the addition of the 1% “wealthy” category, even with all of the “financial advisors” in the marketplace selling insurance, annuities and investments, these numbers have not changed.

The only way those numbers will change is for people to create, with the help of a dedicated, caring professional, a personal written plan and to make their financial decisions within the context of that plan.
